Over the past several years, operators have migrated their mobile core from a virtualized to a cloud architecture to meet their services scale and performance requirements. However, they now look to the longer term realizing that such services may have lifetimes that measure in decades. Therefore the next challenge becomes how to maintain and evolve a mobile core that is in continuous operation. The architectures and technologies (service based interfaces, microservices, containers) used in web-scale applications bring benefits to networking infrastructure in elasticity, robustness and deployment flexibility. The Nokia Cloud Mobile core with its cloud-native design provides an evolution path to a 5G next gen core with web-scale capabilities.
